Some Thoughts from Mike

I think one of the hardest things that I have ever had to go through as an adult was when I was a health practitioner (retired), then became a patient from a serious accident. Until I was a patient, I’d never imagined the pain and struggles that my patients went through. I had to learn how to walk again after my accident. I went through months of surgeries and physical therapy. It was hard getting up and starting over each day. I think that’s where I best express mercy to others…I was able to encourage others while I was going through rehab. I know that I was making a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to make them laugh and focus on getting better. I love using humor as I work with clients. It’s medicine all by itself!

What have we learned from working with all kinds of people? Personally, we can help you dig deep into struggles that you face every day and show you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know that if you have someone who can walk with you each and every step, the road is much easier to travel.

In my rehab clinic, I treated athletes and walk-in patients. I spent lots of time with my clients while treating them. We often talked about everyday problems they were facing: bad relationships, health issues, and business decisions. I felt for these people, and we would engage in problem-solving while they were being treated for specific injuries. That’s where my counseling and coaching began: 30 years ago with my patients. Listening to their needs, problem-solving, educating, and helping them make a game plan that would work for them! Going to a university will get you the skills that you need to build a foundation for your career, but sitting down face-to-face or on the phone and getting to know that person you want to help, can’t be learned in a classroom. You get that by building relationships!

I have seen several of my clients with little or no energy left to do the things they want to in life. They will say that there always seems to be a wall to climb (major problem), or for some, a wall (major disaster) to run head into. Does this sound familiar? I want you to know that I really care about you as my client. I want you to succeed, be happy, enjoy life, and be worry-free. While at my clinic, I got to know most of my patients really well, it was sad to hear several say that most of their lives were filled with defeat and very few victories! It’s an awful feeling to see very few successes in your life and feel that you have no victories to speak of. Do you feel that way at times? If you do and want to be successful in your goal setting, then we will help you to see the overall picture and what plans it takes to get you there. For example, you can’t be a starter for any NFL football team without going through the learning process. You have to learn the playbook, have lots of college experience, and have the heart and courage to play. Believe me, you get worked over pretty well in any NFL training camp.

Life is the same way, you need to know how to get ready for life’s struggles, so you prepare for life’s challenges by mapping out what target areas you want to work on. You must decide is it your relationship at home or at work? You see, if you have a game plan to map out areas that you want to concentrate on, or need help in figuring that out, I can help you. There is no reason why anyone should try to figure out on how to handle relationships alone! I can help you with my experience and knowledge to put a working plan together. That’s why people hire me, I’m successful at what I do. I work hard for my clients.

I have helped many professional athletes with their relationship goals while being there for them during their careers. I have helped counsel and coach doctors and lawyers through bad relationships. We all have those days when nothing seems to go our way, it’s just one problem after another, day after day. I have spent many hours treating patients and listening to them talk about their life struggles. With an open heart, no judging or condemning, I believe listening skills are honed by hearing and taking in what our clients and patients are saying.

I can recall a patient named Shirley, who was a waitress at a truck stop restaurant. She came to the clinic with a knee problem. I examined Shirley and had her make an appointment to have rehab and micro-current therapy for 3 sessions. I had lots of time to talk with Shirley during her treatment, usually 20 minutes of uninterrupted time. Shirley would share stories about her job, family, her failures, dreams and goals, and divorces. I would say little but listened to her, during each treatment session.

After Shirley was released to go back to work, I wondered how she was. I hadn’t seen her in two weeks. As I was checking my patient schedule that Thursday afternoon, there was Shirley’s name! This time she had an elbow injury, I repeated the same treatment program, and again Shirley just wanted to talk about her struggles with work and her husband. So for three weeks, I worked on her physical problems, while she unburdened her relationship problems with me. Again, I listened and made a few suggestions that would help her. Again, I released her back to work.

Two weeks later, I saw Shirley’s name on my patient schedule with a low back problem. When I saw her on the treatment table, I looked her in the eyes and asked her in a soft and gentle voice, “what is the real reason you’re here at the office?” She looked up at me with tears welling up in her eyes and said “My psychiatrist said I should be seeing you and not him, you are helping me with my problems and how I should deal with them”. Wow, do you see how important it is to have someone give you undivided attention and listen to you? That’s what I can promise you when you hire me as your counselor or life coach, I will listen, and then I will help you make a game plan just for you.

You can do it, these people did!

“Mike talked to me on the phone and listened, I felt years of pent-up frustrations and failures peel off my shoulders. He never jumped to any conclusions nor judged me. Mike said, ‘let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work on this'” Helen G, Hazel Crest, Illinois

“Mike was so easy to talk to over the phone, I was surprised how I could share my problems and struggles with him, he listened to me and asked me questions that got to the heart of the matter, I found that his questions are very compelling and opened my eyes to my situations. God bless you for helping me”. Lisa H, Long Island, NY

“I called for the free consultation that Dr. Mike offers, and we talked for twenty minutes, I was surprised at how quickly he could see my issues (lack of trust towards others) and helped me with some of his suggestions. I called back the next day and said that I wanted him to be my life coach, and I am so glad that I did. My life is on track and I am doing great, thanks, Mike.” Doug S, Minneapolis, MN

“I was in a horrible relationship, lots of arguing, fighting, and calling each other names, seemed like our relationship was going nowhere fast, then I called Mike and set up an appointment to talk. The best thing I ever did, was he helped me see that the lack of communication was our biggest problem, he walked me through the process of learning how to communicate with my girlfriend, and now we are doing great”. Carl S, Chicago, Illinois

“You ever feel like you have been beaten up by a counselor? I did from the counselor I was seeing, she never seemed to listen to me or care. Then I had a friend of mine tell me to check out the Applicable Coaching website for getting help from a life coach, that’s when I called Mike and we hit it off right away. He was a great listener, willing to ask me difficult questions of me, and I knew this guy would help me. I had problems at my job, seemed like a dead-end going nowhere. Not anymore, Mike has challenged me to go to college and get the education I need to start my own business. He pointed out my strengths and what weaknesses that I had to work on, no one has ever done that for me”. Sylvia S, Miami, FL

“As a professional football player, I have used Mike to help in planning for my future outside of football. Nothing is forever in the NFL, he encouraged me to look for a future that could help me and my family. I am now out of the NFL and enjoying a new career in public service. Thanks, Mike.” Former Pro Player
